Unmet Expectations

I read an article that one of my friends on Facebook shared last night. It said one of the biggest marriage killers was not lack of love, lack of sex, or anything related to that. It was simply unmet expectations. We go into many things in life like this, don’t we? You expect so many things and then they do not go even close to your way and you are left disappointed, or feeling like a failure or like somebody or something failed you. When in reality, nothing ever goes exactly as planned. Of course in my perfect world I would have the perfect marriage with perfectly behaved kids, and a perfectly clean house..right!? YEAH RIGHT! I know this is impossible, but I still get frustrated daily that I can’t keep up on my “chores” and I can’t get my kids to behave or eat one of the 15 options I gave them for dinner. And why didn’t my husband bring me home 10 pounds of chocolate, takeout, and 2 dozen roses!? HAHA! I’m kidding!! I would have a ton of unmet expectations daily if thats the crap I expected!

ūü§£ That brings me back to the original topic..unmet expectations in marriage. I try very hard not to focus on the unrealistic expectations I set in my head for my marriage..instead I wake up thankful I have this man I fell in love with so many years ago at such a young age..thankful we grew together and not apart in all of the trying times of growing into the adults we are today (god knows 20-30 are not the easiest years!) Do we vacation 3 times a year and have date night once a week..no. Do we get to eat dinner together every day and spend quality family time together daily no. But I go to bed next to someone I truly love and am thankful for any time I get with him. I have a beautiful home and 2 amazing, beautiful, super healthy children…and an amazing family/support system.

It is not an easy thing to let go of expectations. But why put that burden on that other person, to throw all of these you expect of them on their shoulders.. “you need to do X and Y in order to make me happy”. Is it our job to make another person happy? That is a tricky question. I believe if you truly love someone they make you happy just by being themselves..the person you fell in love with before life threw all of these responsibilities at us. Can you imagine at 20 years old caring if your significant other put the garbage out that night or washed their dishes or folded their laundry? NO! You just wanted to be with that person! Enjoy their company. You fell in love with their personality, their brains, their appearance, or whatever it was..you didn’t fall in love with their capability to do chores and pay bills and keep a house clean. While all of those things are important, they are not worth fighting about!!

So basically what I’m getting at..is basically to stop and smell the roses. Don’t dwell on the things you could not accomplish today or the fact that your husband left his dirty clothes on the floor or brought you home the wrong kind of milk. It is going to be okay! We cannot be perfect. Just know you are doing the best you can and if you feel you can do better..do it. I know I have so many things I need to work on as a mother, a wife, a friend. Tomorrow is another day. Have a wonderful rest of the week and remember to let go of your expectations of yourself and of the people around you and they may surprise you! Focusing on the positive things people give you rather than the things they are not doing for you can be freeing. Ciao xoxo <3

A $10 Shopping Spree

If you had a spare $10 in your pocket, what would you do with it? Buy a coffee and a snack? Get lunch? Anyone that knows me knows I love a good deal. And I can sure make $10 stretch if I have to. And anyone that knows me also knows that I love Salvation Army. They have deals every week that whatever color tag they choose is 50% off that item, or 5 for $5. Today I got super lucky and found 10 items at I love all in the color tag that was on sale! I got 10 pieces of clothing for $10! I added up all of the original prices on the tags if they were not 5/$5, and I would have spent $75 on all of these things. And while that is still a good deal for 10 items, $10 is a WAY better deal!! My husband rolls his eyes when I come home with these good deals. To a guy is probably a funny thing, but my fellow bargain shoppers know how much more fun it is to come home with multiple items rather than one or two expensive items. Will I be wearing these items to an event? Of course not, but for a mom who is home with kids every day, these are the perfect items for me. They may have been somebody else’s before mine but they are in perfect condition.

Of the 10 items I found were: Hollister jeans (I don’t try things on when I buy from Salvation Army especially when things are $1 each, but these jeans fit surprisingly well!), American Eagle jeans, an Aeropostale plaid shirt (I have never gotten into this trend but I do like how they looked tied around my waist, I am a very plain jane when it comes to dressing. I like solid colors), A maternity pink sequined sweater (yes I said maternity! It definitely didn’t fit like maternity, it was just much longer which will be great to wear with leggings on a cold day), a Forever 21 t-shirt, a Columbia pink pullover, an American Eagle white shirt with pretty cool back, an H&M 3/4 button up, and an Old Navy owl sweater. Notice a lot of the things I found are well-known brands! Now that my oldest is in school all day ( that’s a whole other blog post! Stay tuned) it is so much easier for me to browse stores with just the little one. This could be very dangerous at times but today it came in handy. As I have said in posts before if you are usually not a bargain shopper or scared of the manyyyy racks at Salvation Army, if you have an hour free give it a go! You might find your next favorite clothing item there. Happy shopping!!

Hair – more than just strands

Hair…ahhh, hair. My passion, my reason, my inspiration. Hair means many more things than just dead strands connected to my head. It’s the only thing I wanted to learn about after high school. My hair is like an old friend that has been there since the beginning. Through the good cuts, the bad colors..it’s been there for me. My hair has changed and grown the same way I have as a person. When I was lost, didn’t know who I was or how to be happy, I chopped it above my ears, then bleached it…then colored it red. When I was trying to cover up my feelings and bad hair choices…I bought a wig (or 10). It may sound silly or like I am making it up, but it is true. About 7 years ago I put an end to that rollercoaster and was ready to be consistent, persistent, the best version of myself I could be. And since then, my hair has been altered a little bit here and there but for the most part it has stayed the same. Just like I have. And as time goes by, I tweaked it a little bit, just like I tweaked myself.

I color my own hair. I don’t have to, but I choose to. Mostly because my inspiration comes at times of the day that no salon would ever be open. It’s after the kids go to bed, and I look in the mirror deciding I deserve to be pampered for once. This is what happened tonight. I wanted a brighter look, and a couple inches chopped off as well. See this is the thing about changing your hair. You can go blonder, or longer. But you can’t do both at the same time. If you are going to brighten your hair and take the plunge and put that bleach on it, you have to be ready to get a good trim after. And don’t forget a conditioning treatment! Your hair and your skin are very porous and if you are going to take the moisture out, you have to put it back in. Sometimes I skip the treatment and I regret it after. Luckily tonight I was hungry so I just stuffed my face while waiting for the treatment to absorb in to my hair!
When I do my own hair, it is therapeutic for me. I carefully decide which strand goes where. And with each stroke of the brush I feel invigorated and excited for the new me that is about to reveal itself! My hair does not turn blonde very easy, so I have had to repeat this process every few months. And I am still not done. In a few months, I will brighten it a bit more again. (and trim, and condition).
If you are planning to get balayage or go lighter in any way, do know it does not happen overnight. It has taken me a very long time to get the bright pieces in my hair that I do have. And if you put trust in your stylist, they can achieve this for you. But don’t skip the trim, don’t skip the conditioning treatment. Treat yourself and treat your hair right and it will thank you!
I love my new look, and the precious ends I cut off will grow back again (slowly but surely) I am growing my layers out so I have to consistently cut the bottom off and leave the layers alone for a bit so they can catch up with my ends. I will be slowly adding some blonder pieces to this look to hopefully achieve a very icy blonde on my ends. If you are looking for something new with your hair, don’t be scared! Find that person you trust and let them tweak your hair a bit, you will feel just as invigorated as I do! I promise it will give you that pep in your step you are looking for. When I have a great hair day I feel like I can go out and accomplish anything! With confidence. Have a great rest of the week everyone!

A constant work in progress

As humans, we strive to be the best version of ourselves, right? I definitely feel like I am always a work in progress. And I actually, now that I am in my 30s, I can say that I do enjoy getting older. I thought I would be scared of these days but every year that passes I’ve become a better version of myself, and in turn it makes me a better mother and wife. And it increases my self love as well. I try to always work out better than the day before, cook a healthier meals than the day before, do a new activity with my children.
It’s funny how you learn some things and you wonder how you lived before you learned them. Even small things, like finding a recipe that I don’t know how I lived without. Or an eyeliner you LOVE! Or a new workout routine. Like when I found fitnessblender on YouTube 2 years ago they totally changed my life. And because of them I have been able to consistently exercise. I used to take body pump classes a couple times a week for about six months. I am so thankful for those classes because I built muscle that I never had before. But I wasn’t able to fit it into my schedule or budget any longer so I am so glad I am able to work out at home now. I feel like working out at home is becoming kind of trendy now. Beachbody/21-day fix is super popular. Honestly, I’m sure those workouts are great but I just don’t think I would be able to do those without getting bored. And I like to be able to be in control of my diet.

So anyway, I was strolling through YouTube the other day and I found another set of videos. I feel is going to take Fitness to a whole new level for me. I found a woman who made Fitness Dance videos, not Zumba but similar I suppose. I could not wait to go to sleep after I found this one because I just wanted to wake up and work out to her videos! She picks the most amazing songs and her routines are pretty easy to follow! After only three songs I was dripping in sweat and had to jump in the shower inmediately. And the now..I am SO sore!! The level of my soreness is showing me that I really needed to mix up my routine because I was in a slump and doing the same workouts for too long and I was not challenging my body. This is just the challenge I needed!¬†Check her videos out here!!¬†I have always loved to dance, and when I was dancing to her videos I just felt…sexy! Like a woman should! I fell in tune with myself and my body. I can’t wait to continue these videos and check in with you guys and see how my mind/body changes. I wish you guys an amazing rest of the week, keep working on yourselves and trying to be the best you! Everyone around you will thank you for it, and it is the best feeling knowing you did something small to improve YOU. I hope my posts have inspired you guys to try something new!

Family Time

Ahhh…the weekend. It came and went so fast. I love when Friday rolls around because I know the next 2 mornings I get to wake up next to my husband (just kidding..I wake up in Evalynn’s bed most of the time because she comes downstairs and steals my bed and husband from me). I wouldn’t totally mind this because I love sleeping alone, but her room is upstairs and mine is on the first floor..so her room is HOT at night. Hmm..no wonder she comes down to my bed, it all makes sense now! Zola is 3 and has never tried to sleep in our bed yet. I am waiting for the day she realizes she can sneak down there in the middle of the night. Last night she sat at the top of the¬†stairs at 5 am saying “I want an egg!!!!” I was like yeah,..no kid. And scratched her back for 30 seconds and she passed back out til 9:30 am.

But yeah, the weekend. Love it. I love making breakfast for everyone and trying so hard to all sit down at the same time and enjoy a meal together. That doesn’t happen often. Friday night Z ended up golfing so I ran to my parents house with the girls for a few hours. I love going there. They live on a huge lot and it is just soo peaceful out there..you feel like you are up north..but really I am only 15 minutes from home! My girls love it there. Evalynn loves “exploring” with her Papa. Mostly exploring bugs and trying to catch butterflies and grasshoppers and trap them in a jar…the poor dears. Their garden¬†is really starting to bloom, so I got to take some yummy produce home. Seriously, if you saw this garden you wouldn’t believe your eyes. They grow so many things. My parents are bosses when it comes to gardening. That summer she was just giving me bags of things like please find somebody who wants this stuff because there is too much! Hahaha. I took a ton of basil to make pesto sauce for the next night. My mother-in-law spent Saturday night-Sunday with us so I wanted to make a yummy homemade meal for us. My mother-in-law is awesome..she is my ride or die chick. She totally goes with the flow and has fun every second of the way. Whatever we want to do, she is like “ok, yeah, lets do it!” We mostly relaxed and watched the girls play, ate a delicious meal with some wine. The next morning I made us breakfast and we took the girls to the mall to play in the ittle play area and run through the fountains. They love going there. We got lunch at Brio afterwards..their food is SO good. They make this steak salad that has a homemade horseradish sauce and a yummy balsamic glaze on top of that. It has pecans, gorgonzola, mushrooms…..it’s just yum. I love going there because they give you unlimited bread and butter (my daughters’ favorite food). Evalynn gets all sassy if her butter runs out too…she is like “where is my refillll!!!!”

Moral of this post is…weekends are awesome, and I would rather spend them with family than anyone. I hate¬†going too long without seeing my parents..and Eva and Zola are super close to them too so I hate to keep them away, Same with my in-laws. They love their Baba and Teta. And the feeling is mutual. My mother-in-law and sister-in-law enjoy every second with them and are so good to them. I think it’s important for them to feel that love and closeness with others..not just me and Z. I melt watching them bond with their grandparents and Aunts and Uncles. I want them to know how important family is and how they always come first before anything. I want them to look back at their childhood and have fond memories of being with their family often.

What is everyone’s favorite part of the weekend? Sleeping in, eating with family, being with friends, being lazy, etc..I would love to hear!! Have a great week everyone..Monday has been conquered..wahhoo!!!

A minnie birthday

Birthday parties for our kids…we try to make them such a memorable event for our kids (funny thing is they probably won’t remember any of them at their ages now…3 and 5). We spend the whole month prior trying to plan what we are going to feed people, what kind of theme the party is going to have, what things we will have to do for people that come over. It all gets a bit stressful for the me. And then on my loved ones come over and I realize how worth it it all is! My friends and family are so amazing too, I do so much work before the party that once the party starts I get kind of lazy. And they totally pick up the slack for me. Help with the kids, the dishes, cutting the cake and serving ice cream because Zola wouldn’t detach from me. My people are amazing. Zola decided she wanted a Minnie Mouse birthday, so that is what we did. I got some upcycled wine bottles and spray painted them black and made them look like Minnie Mouse bottles. And I painted a few pink to make a centerpiece for our kitchen table too. I kept it simple when it came to decorations, I felt like that was enough other than a couple of small things. Zola was so cute..she got tired of all the commotion and went upstairs and passed out in the lazy boy upstairs! We were all laughing..she loves her alone time, always has. She always asks to go to one of our rocking chairs to watch her ipad and relax…alone. She was woken up at the party shortly after by screaming kids of course…just in time for cake and presents. We got a bounce house this year, and it started storming the afternoon of the party and I freaked out that we weren’t going to get to use it! Thank goodness mother nature got her sh*t together and the storm passed and everyone helped get the water out of the Bounce House. The kids had a blast in it all day!!! And us old folks(lol) had a blast too! Lots of yummy treats and adult drinks..it’s not all about the kids yo!!! We need to have fun too! Zola is lucky she has the summer birthday. Evalynn’s birthdays are in the Winter are pretty low-key at our house! We just sit around and eat and hang out…by the warm fireplace! Ugh..I don’t even want to think about Winter yet..Summer us too yummy. Late nights, cold drinks, salads, late night trips to the park and to get ice cream. It’s going to be so hard getting my kids back in school schedule!! This will be our first year of school Monday-Friday and I am nervous! Time to get my butt in gear…I knew this day would have to come eventually. I don’t want to even go there yet…save that for another anxiety filled post!

Sea Salt fail, and a little advertisement ranting

I got this oil in my Ipsy bag a couple months ago. It’s a Macadamia Oil Treatment. You can use it as a styling oil before you blow dry. But it gave me a recipe to make a sea salt spray¬†with it. I figured hey why not give it a try. Does anybody else feel like they are just spraying water on their hair when they do this!? Like, I just went through all the trouble of blow drying and curling my hair, and now you want me to spray water on it? I wonder if this would work better on somebody with naturally curly hair. I was told to use one cup of warm water, 1 tablespoon sea salt and 1-2 teaspoons of the oil. I was so excited to make it and I am kind of sad that I wasn’t happy with the results. I left my hair feeling a little bit try to, I assume that was the sea salt. Maybe more of the oil would help counteract that and keep some moisture? Anyway, that was my experience with it! I would love to know if any of you you sea salt spray on your hair and if it is beneficial for you.

Another thing… I feel like all I see all over the internet is advertisements. I mean, I know we all have businesses to run and we are all trying to make it in this world. And hustling is part of that. But it is so hard to believe what is a good product and what is not in this world. And hustling is part of that. Even celebrities, all you see on their social media is unplugging this and that. Will we really do anything for a dollar? It is so hard to believe what is a good product and what is not because everybody is just advertising everything to death. So many hair vitamins, tanning products, skin products, makeup products. It is just hard to weed through all of it and figure out what are the good ones and what ones people are just trying to plug to make a quick dollar. There are so many MLM companies too..lipsense, R & F, essential oils, mascaras, lula roe, Amway, etc. People claiming that they are an entrepreneur when they sell this stuff. Being an entrepreneur means that you start your own business by creating your own product. Not by selling something somebody else created. I’m sure they are all great products and I do know people that sell each of those, so I’m definitely not dogging that. I just wonder how much of it is about the products and how much of it is about bragging about how much money you make selling your products so you can recruit people to do it with you. It just seems odd to me that people have to brag about how much money they are making selling a product. I definitely don’t like to talk about how much money I am bringing in, why do people selling these products feel the need to talk about that? I think this is just our generation. This is how people sell products now, especially stay-at-home moms who want to be able to work at home. I totally get it, I just can’t get myself to get into that world. The moral of this rant is I just don’t know what to spend my money on anymore, of course we all want great products I just want to make sure I am buying the right ones and putting my money into the right businesses. I wish everybody I know success! Whatever it is they choose to do. Ciao lovelies!

Ipsy Heaven

I was feelin’ kinda icky for a while there, and have been slacking on my posts. Feelin’ like “who’s going to read my posts anyway” “I have nothing interesting to say” “I look terrible I am not posting any selfies ever again.” HA! The selfie queen give up selfies? Who was I kidding. And then all the sudden..I get my groove back. It takes work to get your self confidence back up after talking yourself down. It takes steps. Work out more, eat better, get ready in the morning, put your makeup on etc. Eating better=better energy. Exercising=endorphins released=positive thoughts. We can’t give up on ourselves. I know I am not the only one who has negative thoughts, but the key is to not let them take over. Sure, go ahead and sulk for a couple days, but don’t let it become habit. Eating and exercising really do determine my moods. Too much sugar causes the sugar spikes which make me tired. Eating heavy makes me tired. I cut out fast food and even took sugar out of my coffee and smoothies for a few days. Eating small meals throughout the day has definitely helped. And an added bonus-my kids are on summer vacation hours! They have been sleeping in until 9 am or even later most days! I am a night owl so I appreciate this. Both of my girls passed out in the car at 5:30 pm¬†yesterday for almost 2 hours. At first I thought “wow, this is going to be fun we can stay up late together!” …and then 11:30 pm came and they were still fighting sleep. Oh how it bit me in the butt! This time of year is so awesome though,¬†isn’t it? It’s warm out til bedtime, it’s light out until 9 pm, everyone is outside playing and enjoying themselves. It brings out the happy in you even when you don’t want to be happy.

So, the point of this post-IPSY. My last bag was AWESOME! So many great products!!! The Cabana Boy Shadow/Blush¬†was from a few months back, but is still one of my favorite blushes to wear.¬† This month I received a body lotion that feels like silk on your body and smells soooo amazing, it is called Delectable-coconut & cream.¬†They sent me a pretty large bottle to sample too. It feels so good on my skin.¬† The Vasanti lip gloss really shocked me. It was not sticky at all, and gives me that WET look. A lot of lip glosses lack that. It really feels moisturizing on my lips as well.¬†The bold brow by city color¬†was a hit too! It comes with a medium and darker brown shade, so you can mix them to find your perfect shade. Some days I do the lighter color alone, and some days I do the darker alone to give a more dramatic look (when I have full makeup and hair done.) The eyeliner I received is really nice because it is waterproof but is super easy to get off with my Pond’s makeup remover. The only downfall of the pencil is I cannot get the sharp lines for the cat-eye look I so crave. I have to add the sharp edges in with one of my other eyeliners. The best eyeliner Ipsy has sent me is the EM Cosmetics felt tip eyeliner..it has such a soft, pointy tip that I can achieve any kind of cat-eye I want. The only thing I was not super fond of was the Trust Fund beauty nail polish. It did not go on very smooth and took too long to dry, so the application just looked sloppy. I only use Essie nail polish, you cannot beat them!! If I am in a hurry I can throw one coat of Essie on to get me cy, and it dries super quick.

So all in all, I am having a blast trying all of these new beauty products. I can’t wait for next month! If any of you are not as happy with your Ipsy bags, make sure to review what they send you so they can better understand what kind of products you like. Have a great week!!!

Summer hair, summer salad

So here we are finally, warm weather has arrived. More like hot, sweat in places you don’t dare admit kind of weather. Am I the only one who has been tempted to throw their hair up in a messy bun everyday? As a hairstylist, it just feels wrong. Like I’ve thrown in the towel or something! Can’t give up..never give up! I’ve been trying to figure out ways to bear the heat, but also look somewhat presentable. I don’t mind my hair down, I just want it out of my face and I was sick of just tucking it behind my ears. I found something that looks cute, and keeps my hair out of my face. I just take a mohawk section on top of my head seperate it into 3 sections. And I twist them and pin them..so simple! If I want to get real creative I will braid them. But not everybody can do that on themselves, twisting seems much simpler. And if I get super hot during the day I can put my hair in a low bun with this look and it still looks pretty cute.

It is also time to not be bloated season. This is hard for me because I do love my salt in my carbs, but I’m trying to cut back and all the yucky stuff right now. I actually managed to gain a few pounds recently and I think it’s because I have been experimenting with cooking. Must be all that naan! Darn you mediterranean fopd for being so good! It is time to think of light meals, like yummy salads! I experimented today and made a salad with dried cherries, apple chunks, Gorgonzola cheese, walnuts, chicken, and of course – lettuce. Why the only one that could do without lettuce and a salad? All of the add-ins are what I love to eat! For example, I love to just cut up tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese and put some olive oil, lemon juice, and salt on it. So refreshing! For my salad dressing today I used 4 oz olive oil, 2 oz balsamic vinegar, and 2 oz red wine vinegar and seasoned the dressing with garlic powder, brown sugar, salt, and seasoned salt. This dressing is really good on a Greek salad too! I sauteed the chicken on a pan with half butter and olive oil. I seasoned the chicken with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and seasoned salt. And was really good black and chicken! Tastes so good on a salad too or in a wrap.

Have a great rest of the week everyone!!

A Friday ramble

TGIF! Happy Friday everyone, I hope you all had a great week. I look forward to the weekend because I actually get to see my husband. We get no quality time¬†during the week. And if I am lucky, my girls let me speak 5 words to him over the entire course of weekend. High maintenance little buggers. You can’t blame a 3 and 5 year old..they think “what can you do for me next.” I took my turn being a little selfish today and *gasp* actually blowdrying my hair. I worked out too! I spent most of my week cooking,¬†potty training, and taking them here and there to keep them busy in my spare time. Because I, too, always think of what I can do for them next! Not to mention I am Evalynn’s only source of education since preschool ended. The dollar store had some great books to keep her going. She doesn’t mind stopping to practice her letters or whatever else I ask her. My girls are pretty good about going with the flow and I do appreciate them for that. They had no problem watching the movie Trolls on Netflix (can you believe this is already on Neflix btw!?) while I exercised and got myself ready. I have felt in a funk since Evalynn got out of school, trying to find my rhythm with the new schedule, trying to figure out when and how to run errands with 2 silly girls with me. It has been an adjustment, but we are figuring it out! But I do admit knowing they can keep busy while I do “my” stuff every day really makes me proud of them. I have a cutie next to me right now hugging me while eating her minion mac n cheese. “Let me watch you work” she says…I just love this little girl!

Zola has been through a lot this week with me with the whole potty training ordeal. We went without pull-ups for the most part for 3 days, but after her peeing on my carpeted stairs, my bonus room, and all over a chair, I had had enough of cleaning up pee! I am still on her butt about peeing constantly but the stress of not knowing when and where she was going to pee next was turning me into a mad person (more than I already am). I read this article about a couple ways to potty train. One was setting a timer every 15 minutes for 3 days and sitting your child on the potty. Zola was annoyed by me trying this. She was like “really Mom? Just peed..bugg off.”

Another article shocked me.. it said to go BOTTOMLESS for 3 months while at home (the kid :-D). This was just…no. My daughter would leave secret pee puddles all over my house if I did this. I do not have time to stare at my kid 24/7 to make sure she doesn’t dribble all over the darn place. I want to talk to people who have tried this and I want them to tell me that this was not a huge disaster. There has to be another way! I know there is another way because I didn’t do that for my oldest daughter.

Anywho I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I know I will..sunshine, family, friends, good food and alcohol..gosh I love Summer!!!

I got this tank on clearance at Target btw…they never disappoint. Super comfy, soft, and long tanks…score.
